Like I noted in our last class, that our next topic on government will be franchise, now its time to look deep inside the meaning of franchise, types, merits and demerits.
Franchise may be defined as the political right of qualified adult citizen of a country to vote and be voted for. Provided one meets up with the demands of the Constitution under a democratic process, the right to vote and been voted for is been conferred on such individual.
Note, that the demands and stipulations of the Constitution defers with respect to the country in discuss.
TYPES OF FRANCHISE.
generally speaking, we have two types of franchise. Others may exist , but this class will focus on two known types.
LIMITED OR RESTRICTED FRANCHISE.
UNLIMITED OR UNIVERSAL FRANCHISE .
we shall briefly elucidate each of them.
Limited or restricted franchise is a one in which the right to vote and to be voted for is purely restricted. Only the qualify voters are allowed to vote or can to be voted into political offices .
This type also gave criteria for one to be qualified to vote or be voted for.

UNLIMITED OR UNIVERSAL ADULT SUFFRAGE.
before I proceed, it would be pertinent to note that this type of franchise is popular and universally acknowledged.reasons been that it is constitutional and Democratic In nature.its a type that accords with everyone that right to vote and be voted for.
Note – it also has some criteria that one must fulfill before been qualify to vote and be voted for.
Age and citizenship among others, but they remain Democratic.
MERITS OF FRANCHISE.
franchise or suffrage as one may chose to call has played a vital role in the advancement of democracy through several means , which includes.
Equality of voters. It gives individuals a sense of belonging in the political activities in their country.
Popularly elected representatives.
It democratical and has constitutional backings .
It makes for full and active participation.
DEMERITS OF BOTH RESTRICTED franchise AND UNIVERSAL FRANCHISE.
Restricted franchise tends to disenfranchise some citizens
The style of limited is representative.
While universal suffrage on the other hand , has the following as it’s demerits.
No true representation
Intimidation of opponents
The worst part is electoral malpractice.
