My dear students, am happy seeing you all here today. Teacher Judith is here again to lecture you. To explain further to you what is called the civil service commission. What they do as a body , and the reason for its establishment. In other words functions of the commission.
The civil service commission is an independent body with members holding office based on good behavior and is set up by the government and entrusted with the duty of recruiting men into the service by open competition supplemented by interviews most times.it is made up chairman and other appointees who sees to the recruit, discipline and dismissal of civil servants.
This body plays a vital role in the strengthen of the productivity of civil servants and labour force.
FUNCTIONS OF CIVIL SERVICE COMMISSION.
This body is saddled with multifarious functions. We shall be taking as much as we could and the rest will be an assignment to be submitted the next time I come to this class.
1. Efficiency and integrity; this is the guiding principle of civil service, and it’s the responsibility of the civil service commission to see that its a reality.
2.conditions of service; the commission also has the right to state the terms and conditions of service, allowances and remunerations of civil service
3.Retirement; the commission has played a vital role in this aspect, because some people after their official years of retirement still want to remain in office.
4 .promotion; it also promotes individuals are due for promotion
5.Recruitment; Recruitment to me, looks like the most important function they perform. It’s their responsibility to recruit high level manpower into the civil service through open competition or by interview.
They also serve as an advisory body to the government in the area of appointment of state department and parastatals .
These and more forms the functions of the civil service especially with respect to Nigeria context.
