Electoral commission is a body established to ensure that elections are conducted in an atmosphere of peace, conduciveness , that is devoid of harassment and irregularities. This body is headed by a chairman, this chairman is the overall head of the commission, and it has a residing chairman, who is responsive to the general chairman.
This body is noted by different names with respect to the country in discourse. In Nigeria they were first known as FEDECO , that was in Nigeria first republic. In third republic, they were renamed NEC , and conducted 1993 Election. That election was later annulled by the then head of state , in the person of Ibrahim Babangida , this made the Nigeria third republic to be ill-fated , or abortive. They are now known as INEC , “independent electoral commission” This implies that they possess autonomy. they were independent to avoid distractions from government in power. It’s important to note also that , different countries of the world has different name they call theirs.
This body is an important and integral part of the conduct of election. As it supervisors election and other related issues concerning the electoral process.
FEATURES OF ELECTORAL COMMISSION.
its independent , meaning that they act on their own .
They are established by act of parliament. This means that they have constitutional backing.
It’s also the duties of this commission to announce results after the conduct of election.
Their various officers has fixed term of office, it depends on the what is stipulated in the constitution.
Neutrality, they are political neutral , meaning that they don’t engage in partisan politics to enable them discharge their responsibilities efficiently and credibly.
I will not finish with this features without mentioning that they are full of honesty and play fairly. This attribute is the most important because, if they are not of honest nature it will affect the discharge of their duties .
FUNCTIONS OF ELECTORAL COMMISSION.
This commission is saddled with some responsibility expected of them to carry out. Which includes the following,
1.Registration of political parties , recently , they registered five political party in Nigeria.
2.Registration of voters , we all are familiar with this. In Nigeria it’s only people who are up to 18 years that can vote.
3. Counting of vote cast , screening of individuals vying for different political positions in Nigeria.
They also delimitate the country into constituencies. The last but not the least is implementing the system or type of voting to be adopted.
The electoral commission plays a vital role for the smooth running of democratic government and process.
